Living on the Edge 253; Ebbstock and Cartwright…

“Good Heavens, but this is exhausting,” gasped Crispie to his manservant, Ebbstock. They had been walking in the hills above their hotel for just a quarter hour.

“I can’t understand what people see in it,” he continued.

“Shall we have a sandwich? And, and a little snifter before we carry on?”

Ebbstock, who had inwardly questioned the wisdom of walking further than to the nearest public house, looked skywards and took a deep breath.

“Well, Sir,” he began, “I did take the liberty of making a few sandwiches for our outing; unfortunately, the usual filling of which you are so fond is not something I was able to acquire.”

“Ebbstock, this is insufferable!” exclaimed Crispie. “We shall have to return immediately. Let’s have no more of this health and fresh air nonsense. Crispin J. Cartwright has had his fill!” and with that, he swivelled and set out whence they’d come. Ebbstock closed the hamper.

“I don’t know about On Ilkley Moor Bar t’At,” announced Crispie, “but hillwalking sans bloater paste is simply not cricket!”

“Indeed, sir,” said Ebbstock and followed knowingly…
