The story…

May smiled and flung her windows wide. She breathed in the freezing air until she could hold no more. And there it was; the smell of the cold.

“It’s here! It’s here!” she whispered joyfully to herself, trying not to wake the others. It didn’t matter how many winters she’d seen; the first snowfall always made her gleeful.

The snow was barely a sprinkling but that wouldn’t dampen May’s alacrity. There would be more, she could see it in the skies, like a big, puffy promise…

When the others awoke, she’d be ready for them. Her freshly baked cherry shortbread biscuits were piled high on the best plate and she set about making chocolate soup. She lit a fire in her hearth, found her ‘to read pile’ and settled back to watch and wait…
